Hi folks,
Here's a small excerpt from chapter six: "Journey To Deepwater"
"A thin sliver of light came to her eyes, as, ahead, the passageway gave way to the outside. Bursting forward from the passageway, the hot sun was like a soothing balm to them both. Vergail had no time to gather her bearings, for her guide darted off immediately, scurrying over the small rocks and boulders that covered the area. Gasping for breath, Vergail followed. Though the initial rays of the sun had had a calming effect, pretty soon the hot temperature became a burden. As they clambered over rocks and ran on pebbles, their progress was slow, and there was no cover from the burning sun. Glancing over her shoulder, back at the passageway entrance, which was still ominously close, Vergail could see red robed figures emerging, hissing and screeching. They did not seem to worry about the sunlight. All too close, they began to follow, hauling themselves over the rocky landscape with ease and agility. They were fast. The priestess forced herself to go faster. A spear whistled overhead, clattering into the rocks before her. Vergail moved as fast as she could, her heart in her mouth. Her friend in front stopped, waiting for her to catch up with him. It was an act of courage and kindness; he could have made haste and saved himself, but he risked his own life to wait for her. She would not forget that, she thought, provided they would get out of this alive. Reaching her ally, Vergail nodded in gratitude that he had waited for her. He helped her climb over another jagged outcrop of stone, holding her hand and pulling her up. Here, the rocks were more joined, but they seemed to be reaching up into the sky, forcing them to climb rather than simply run. It slowed them down. A quick glance behind once more and Vergail could see the creatures gaining on them. There were five of them in pursuit. She could see their hideous faces, all forked tongue, purple and grey skin. Four of them carried a wooden spear with a black sharp point. As she watched, almost in a sick fascination, the creatures, as one, lifted the spears aloft, and threw them into the sky towards them. They had mere moments to react. Her guide pulled her sideways, plunging himself to the ground. His actions saved her life, for as she fell with him, three of the spears smashed into the rock where her head had been. One, however, had aimed slightly lower, and the spear struck her in her left leg. The pain shot through her leg and through her whole body, and Vergail cried out in anguish."
